PROGRESS Wrestling Simon Miller Interview: “Losing to Robbo would just underline this feeling people have about me so there’s more than just the Proteus Championship on the line here.”
Robbo recently questioned your ability to accomplish something that even the current WWE Champion Gunther couldn’t do — knock him out or tap him out. How do you respond to Robbo’s claim that you’re not capable of beating him in that way for the championship?
He should feel that way. Look at his record. It’s second to none and it’s a who’s who of pro-wrestlers. You don’t hold a title for that long without creating somewhat of a legacy so Robbo has earned the right to be confident.
It’s me who has to prove people wrong. That’s why I keep calling it the biggest match of my career. If I don’t win, where does that leave me? What do I do next? Losing would just underline this feeling people have about me so there’s more than just the Proteus Championship on the line here.
I’ve gotta show individuals like Robbo that there’s more to Simon Miller the wrestler than this picture they’ve painted of me. The crazy part is that we have to do that against arguably the most dominant champion in PROGRESS history.
Robbo has held the Proteus title through some brutal matches and believes your media presence doesn’t translate into being a threat in the ring. How do you plan to prove him wrong when it comes to balancing entertainment and in-ring skills?
Has Robbo heard himself talk? Or watched his matches back? The man is brutal but he’s entertaining. Look what he did to me. He booted me in the testicles and then sort of did a little dance. He understands that side of wrestling. It all ties in. He’s trying to use all that to put doubt in my mind. It’s smart.
Ultimately, nothing I do is an act. This is just me. Some people are gonna warm to it. Others will think I suck, but if you don’t showcase yourself in an honest way, fans see right through it. I’ve never been interested in that. I would rather be despised for being myself than loved for being someone else.
You’ve built a strong connection with fans through your work as a YouTuber and content creator. Do you think Robbo underestimates the dedication and hard work it takes to be successful in both arenas?
Yeah, I do. He didn’t need to accept this match. He could’ve whacked me in the groin and told me to flub off.
Again, Robbo isn’t an idiot. He considers every single move and has looked at this from every angle. He’s not going to say nice things about me, though. That doesn’t help him. Instead he’s trying to turn all that on its head but I told him this. I’ve studied everything he does so I’m ready for all that. I get it.
Robbo described your upcoming match as an opportunity to ‘expose’ you in the ring. Do you see this match as a defining moment in your wrestling career?
For sure. Wrestling is about winning titles. Otherwise why are we here?
I don’t think he can ‘expose’ me either way, though, because that’s on me, not him. I’m not coming to lose, but as long as I can leave with my head held high and knowing I brought everything, I’m good.
How do you plan to elevate the championship if you succeed in dethroning Robbo?
I’m not sure elevating is the right word. Again, 5 years as champion. You’d have to go 6 years to make the title mean even more.
What we can do – I think – is remember the Proteus Title was always meant to be a title that represented what the fans wanted. No one understands that more than me so it’ll be my number one goal. I want everyone to be on-board with what we do. Hell, maybe they can even help decide what we should do with it!
Lastly, how much would it mean to you to make your fans proud with a historic win over Robbo ending what will be his 1869th day as Proteus Champion?
It would be everything. I’ve done some really cool things in my career, but this would top it all. To win a championship in PROGRESS – after once being told I’d never even get an opportunity there – would just send a message that you can prove people wrong and you can achieve your dreams, as sappy and as over the top as that sounds.
If I’m able to do that after such a historic reign… well, it would essentially take me to a level I would assume some people thought wasn’t possible.
That’s what I seem to do by accident, though. Prove people wrong. If I win the Proteus Championship, I’m not sure anyone is going to be able to doubt me again.”
