PROGRESS Wrestling Chapter 174 Review: The second ever annual VENDETTA show was bookended by matches involving Young Guns and Boisterous Behaviour and their vendetta really came to the fore in both matches!
Singles Match: Man Like Dereiss vs Ethan Allen
A gritty, hard-hitting scrap was on display here, just raw aggression. Ethan Allen dominated the early exchanges, setting a vicious tone for the bout. Both competitors showcased their familiarity with one another, countering each other’s moves with precision.
Man Like Dereiss diversified his usual arsenal, favouring strikes and submissions over his usual high-octane offence, which proved how real the dislike between the two is as he had no intention of playing to the crowd on this night. The action spilled to the floor, where Allen hurled Dereiss through a set of chairs, escalating the chaos. The match ultimately ended in a double count-out, but the hostility didn’t stop there. It took the combined efforts of the entire referee team and ring crew to pull these two apart, setting the stage for what feels like an inevitable rematch.
Of course, Ethan had to take his aggression out on the red shirts post-pull apart brawl, just because he’s Ethan Allen.
Singles Match: Lana Austin vs Emersyn Jayne
Lana Austin’s self-perception seems to have taken an interesting turn, as she’s begun handing out “golden tickets” for the privilege of stepping into the ring with her. Last weekend in Manchester, Emersyn Jayne became the first recipient after defeating Natalie Sykes. After a brief absence, Austin returned with new entrance graphics and theme, Tina Turner’s ‘Simply the Best.’
Austin seized control early, delivering a suplex on the floor and asserting her dominance in the ring, all while taunting both Jayne and the crowd. In a bold move, Austin grabbed a microphone mid-match to take a verbal jab at Rayne Leverkusen, who was in the crowd as a fan, even spilling her beer over her. However, the distraction gave Jayne an opening, allowing her to mount a comeback. The bout evened out with Jayne landing some of her signature offence, and a well-timed roll-up secured Jayne the victory, much to Austin’s frustration.
Unable to handle the loss, Austin attempted a post-match attack with a steel chair but was thwarted by Leverkusen, leaving her golden ticket scheme off to a shaky start.
That left Emersyn Jayne to celebrate a huge win over a former PROGRESS Women’s World Champion with the debuting Rayne Leverkusen!
PROGRESS Proteus Title Match: Simon Miller (c) vs Session Moth Martina vs Will Kroos vs Gene Munny
The Gene Munny family continues to expand, now including the ever-chaotic Session Moth Martina and her self-proclaimed “son,” Will Kroos. This match came to life after they confronted the new Proteus Champion, Simon Miller, at the previous show, leading to this surreal four-way bout. Adding to the absurdity was the presence of “Puppet Miller” in Simon’s corner.
As the match began, it initially resembled a singles bout between Kroos and Miller, with Munny seizing the moment to stage a sneak attack. Martina also tried her own unique brand of distraction, though with limited success as Miller clearly doesn’t find her grinding bants. As expected, the contest unfolded more like a three-on-one handicap scenario against Miller.
A miscommunication led to Kroos inadvertently flattening Martina, but true to her resilient nature, she wasn’t out of the fight for long. Family stuck together as none of Munny, Martina, or Kroos attempted to pin one another for the title despite the opportunity and because of that Simon Miller was able to find a way. The match ended with Miller pinning Martina via a roll-up, capitalizing on Munny’s attempt to let Martina claim the win – even counting the pin himself without realising what had happened. Simon Miller’s reign continues, and the match leaves fans with another memorable chapter of Proteus-level mayhem.
Singles Match: Trent Seven vs Ricky Knight Jr
Trent Seven made his long-awaited return to PROGRESS Wrestling after a five-year absence, taking on a fresh opponent in His opponent, Ricky Knight Jr in this first time ever match up.
The match began at a deliberate pace, with Seven showcasing some of his trademark antics and RKJ countering with some close to the bone remarks to his elder. RKJ’s explosive moments, like the massive diving elbow from the stage to the floor were awe-inspiring, but much to his chagrin, Trent Seven was proving that he is better and stronger than he was in 2019 when he left PROGRESS.
The crowd were thoroughly invested throughout, as two generations of PROGRESS battled for supremacy in a surprisingly hard-hitting battle between two fan favourites. This was an absolute banger of a match that proved RKJ is ready to push on towards the top of the card and Trent Seven can still go.
After the match, despite the loss, Trent Seven addressed the PROGRESS faithful, declaring his intention to return and promising this wasn’t a one-off as a thank you to the fans who kept the scene alive when he was gone.
Singles Match: Nina Samuels vs Kanji
This match was the culmination of one of the most personal feuds in PROGRESS this year, the match kicked off with Kanji targeting Nina Samuels’ previously injured shoulder, bringing an intense, aggressive start. However, the momentum gradually shifted into a more evenly contested battle, with neither wrestler fully in control for long. Their familiarity with one another was evident, as they countered each other’s moves seamlessly. At times, the match devolved into fierce striking exchanges, further emphasizing the bad blood between them.
The finish saw Samuels resort to underhanded tactics, faking a severe shoulder injury to lure Kanji into a moment of compassion. This lapse allowed Samuels to capitalise and win.
Post-match, Samuels continued her assault on Kanji, focusing on her previously severely broken arm to deliver an emphatic message. Even the ring crew, attempting to intervene, found themselves on the receiving end of Samuels’ wrath. She then cut a scathing promo on her long-time foe before declaring that with Kanji out of teh scene through her newly injured arm, she is setting her sights on our PROGRESS Women’s World Champion, Rhio.
Tag Team Match: Lykos Gym vs Nico Angelo & Connor Mills
Connor Mills has been struggling with a losing streak in recent months, but at the previous chapter, he aligned with Nico Angelo to launch a brutal attack on Lykos Gym, marking the formation of a dangerous new partnership.
The match began with a fiery pace, with Mills and Angelo displaying ruthless aggression to counter Lykos Gym’s signature double-team speed. After an initial flurry of offence from Lykos Gym, Mills and Angelo took control, isolating Kid Lykos and delivering a relentless beating.
A brief comeback followed when Kid Lykos II made a hot tag, but it didn’t last. He quickly found himself on the receiving end of another sustained assault, with Angelo and Mills methodically dismantling him with submissions and strikes. The match concluded with Lykos II tapping out, cementing Mills and Angelo’s dominance.
This was surprisingly one-sided and firmly established Mills and Angelo as a force in the tag team division. Their ruthless approach and unrelenting aggression make them serious contenders and it seems Nico Angelo really is the fire for Connor Mills.
Tag Team Match: SAnitY vs SUBCULTURE
SAnitY made their return to PROGRESS for their first match since losing the Tag Team Titles in September, squaring off against Subculture, who themselves recently re-entered the PROGRESS fold during SAnitY’s absence. With Axel Tischer still holding the PROGRESS Atlas Championship, this marked a first-time-ever clash between two well-established and highly regarded tag teams.
The match began with a technical exchange between Flash Morgan Webster and Axel Tischer, showcasing their precision and skill. Big Damo and Mark Andrews then took over, contrasting their styles in an engaging sequence that highlighted Damo’s sheer size and power against Andrews’ agility and speed. As the match settled into its rhythm, it became a classic battle of power versus quickness, with SAnitY leveraging their physical dominance while Subculture relied on their fast-paced, high-flying offense.
SAnitY’s mean streak was evident throughout, as they seemed to relish targeting their smaller opponents, delivering punishing offense with an air of sadistic glee. Despite the size disadvantage, Subculture had their moments, including a Pinball Wizard dive to the floor by Webster that electrified the crowd. However, SAnitY’s experience and teamwork ultimately allowed them to regain control, sealing the win with a decisive pinfall.
This victory marks a significant step back toward the tag team titles for SAnitY, re-establishing themselves as a dominant force in the division and setting the stage for future contention as well as serving as a warning to Sunshine Machine that SAnitY are back as a new force.
PROGRESS Men’s World Championship Match: Luke Jacobs (c) vs Leon Slater
A main event befitting the show’s title, this clash was set up when Leon Slater pinned Luke Jacobs in a tag team bout at the previous chapter in Manchester. Luke Jacobs promised before this bout that no one embarrasses him and gets away with it…
The tension was palpable from the start, with both men locking eyes throughout their entrances. Jacobs appeared rattled by the crowd’s chants about Man City’s recent poor form and Slater was able to get on top early doors through his speed and precision. The pace shifted, with Jacobs using his explosive power targeting his back to offset Slater’s high-flying.
The intensity escalated with big moves and suspenseful near-falls, before Ethan Allen’s attempted interference was thwarted by Man Like DeReiss. A desperate Jacobs used the title belt but DeReiss saved Slater from defeat, by pulling the ref out of the ring in a callback to the fate suffered by he himself in the previous two chapters.
Leon Slater was able to take advantage and momentum from there and after hitting his swanton 450 it looked like we were about to witness history with the youngest ever champion, but Jacobs reversed the pin attempt into one of his own and picked up the win via crucifix pin, narrowly retaining his title in a thrilling, hard-fought battle.
The fans were left deflated, as were both Boisterous Behaviour members who looked aghast in the ring as Jacobs slipped away laughing, holding on tightly to his PROGRESS Men’s World Championship.
