Tate Mayfairs, The self-proclaimed Greatest Professional Wrestler To Ever Walk Planet Earth?
In the annals of PROGRESS Wrestling, there have been numerous talents who have left an indelible mark on the promotion, contributing to its legacy as one of the most innovative and exciting independent wrestling promotions in the world.
Among those is none other than Tate Mayfairs, whose journey in PROGRESS Wrestling has been a captivating tale of resilience, arrogance, and undeniable skill.
Tate Mayfair burst onto the PROGRESS Wrestling scene with an undeniable charisma that caught the attention of fans and critics alike. From the very beginning, Mayfairs showcased a unique blend of technical prowess and a hard-hitting style that should have been enough to see him gain victories without cheating, but alas a big part of his game is winning by any means necessary and then claiming he won clean. His early matches were marked by a hunger for success, as he faced off against future NXT Tag Team Champions Pretty Deadly in a dark match and made a name for himself in matches against Big Guns Joe and Dean Allmark.
As PROGRESS Wrestling continued to grow out of the pandemic, so did Tate Mayfairs. His rise through the ranks was swift, and fans began to witness the development of a more nuanced and strategic wrestler. Mayfairs’ ability to adapt to different opponents and match scenarios became evident. During this period, he engaged in memorable matches and participated in some of the promotion’s most iconic moments, including his meeting with former Olympic boxer and AEW star Anthony Ogogo where he antagonised the Guv’nor multiple times before finally being knocked out.
After that notorious moment, rather than shirking the limelight and laying low after such a hit, it lit a fuse inside him that he could be on the same stage as the ‘bigger’ names in the company and he soon set his eyes on the Aerial Assassin Will Ospreay.
An online campaign was set up calling out the newly signed AEW star and eventually Tate Mayfairs got his wish and was drawn to face Ospreay at Super Strong Style 16.
The match was incredible and Mayfairs to his credit hung with one of if not the best wrestler in the world that day at the Tufnell Park Dome. That match was proof that maybe, just maybe Tate Mayfairs can back up his arrogance and since then he has only lost a few singles matches, as his trajectory appears to be going up and up in PROGRESS Wrestling.
One cannot discuss Tate Mayfairs’ PROGRESS Wrestling tenure without acknowledging his feud with Simon Miller.
After Miller’s surprise PROGRESS Wrestling debut at Unboxing V against Tate Mayfairs, Simon went back to hosting but months of goading online and in-ring after his cheap victory got under Simon’s skin and soon a tag match was made between them at It’s Clobberin’ Time.
Team Tate lost that match but Tate wasn’t pinned. That wasn’t enough for Miller who wanted his victory back and eventually, after evading Miller only to attack him whilst he was hosting and the singles rematch was on.
A great match was taking place at at Hungry Like The Wolf only for Tate to stoop to using his brass knux again and then pretend to have beaten his foe by wristlock after applying one to the fallen Miller.
This of course, incensed Simon Miller who at VENDETTA knocked out Tate Mayfairs with his own brass knuckles and informed ‘Tateness is Greatness’ that at Unboxing 6, a year after their first singles match, the trilogy will be complete… in a STREET FIGHT
As we reflect on Tate Mayfairs journey in PROGRESS Wrestling, it’s evident that he has left an enduring legacy within the promotion. His contributions to memorable matches, captivating storylines, and the overall growth of the promotion have etched his name in the history books.
Tate Mayfairs’ retrospective in Progress Wrestling is a tale of triumphs, challenges, and growth. From his early days as a promising newcomer to his status as a an established roster member.
As fans look back on his career, they will undoubtedly remember Tate Mayfairs as a key figure in the promotion’s history, even if they won’t buy his self branded cologne at the merch table.
