The energy at PROGRESS Wrestling’s last chapter, The Devil On My Shoulder was electric, not least when Mike D and Axel Tischer tore the house down with their ATLAS Title match. In this exclusive interview, Mike D delves into his PROGRESS Wrestling run so far, the atmosphere in the Electric Ballroom and his future goals in the company.
You’ve made a significant impact in PROGRESS Wrestling since your debut at the 2024 Super Strong Style 16 tournament. Can you share your thoughts on how that match set the tone for your career in PROGRESS and what this experience has meant to you so far?
Thank you for acknowledging that. I have had the privilege of competing in two singles matches in PROGRESS so far: one against Luck Jacobs, the winner of the SSS16 tournament and the new world champion, and the other for a title shot against the ATLAS champion, Axel Tischer. These two matches were against top competitors, and I couldn’t have asked for better opponents. These opportunities have allowed me to introduce myself to the PROGRESS audience and make a positive impression.
However, the real challenge lies ahead, and I remain focused on the upward trajectory. Working in PROGRESS has always been a goal of mine, and being able to do so under these circumstances, with the support of both the company and the fans, is a privilege. I feel like I have made the most of these opportunities, but you haven’t seen anything from Mike D yet.
Your recent match against Axel Tischer for the ATLAS Championship at Chapter 169: The Devil On My Shoulder generated a lot of online buzz. How did you feel about the fans’ reactions, and did the match feel as special as it appeared?
The fan reactions have been incredible, both online and live, with them shouting my name, cheering for me, and coming up with nicknames like “Magic Mike”. It’s extremely gratifying to see them appreciate my work, and the level of support since my first appearance is truly amazing. Their reactions inspire me to keep pushing myself. This match felt special, largely due to the incredible support from the fans and the intensity of facing off against Axel Tischer. Axel is special, he allows me to express myself.
You were featured in many watchalongs online for PROGRESS Wrestling. How was that experience, and did it give you any new insights into how your matches are perceived by fans watching from home?
There’s so much wrestling available to watch online, and yet they still choose to watch me. That means a lot. Having the necessary exposure to be seen by fans all around the world, and having the opportunity to showcase what I work for every day is so rewarding. I hope to inspire people as they follow my journey. I believe my matches are perceived as they truly are: intense, a mix of power and athleticism with that Mike D touch. I’m always trying new things with the same purpose, entertaining the fans. Their chants, their online interactions and their support are my reward for my work.
Facing Axel Tischer, a member of SAnitY, was a high-profile opportunity. What were the key takeaways from that match, and how do you view your performance against such a renowned competitor?
Axel brought a unique energy to our match, making it truly special. It was a tough challenge that brought out the best in both of us. Wrestling against him was both physically demanding and mentally stimulating. I believe our match demonstrated the passion and drive we have for wrestling. I wanted to prove that I belong among the best. The journey is still long, but I think that’s exactly what I am doing match after match.
And I’m not done with Axel just yet. When the opportunity arises again, I’ll be ready to face him once more. And the result will be different this time. We both know what would have happened if he didn’t roll away from my shooting star press.
You competed for the ATLAS Championship, showcasing your ability to challenge top-tier opponents. Do you see yourself continuing to pursue opportunities in the ATLAS division, or are there other goals within PROGRESS that you’re aiming for?
Opportunities, visibility, victories, gold – that’s what I’m aiming for. I’m prepared to conquer PROGRESS and show I belong among the best. I’ll embrace challenges and take on any opponent, whether in the ATLAS division or elsewhere. There are still rivalries to settle with Luck Jacobs and many other talents I look forward to facing.
Both you and Aigle Blanc have impressed audiences but are still searching for your first major victories in PROGRESS. Do you see any parallels in your paths, and how do you feel about your current standing in the promotion?
It’s only a matter of time, for both of us. I view Aigle Blanc and myself as two distinct French-speaking talents chasing the same dream. In the French-speaking wrestling world, opportunities can be limited. Aigle Blanc has been fortunate to get the support of wrestling schools/promotions since the early days of his career, while I have relied on my own perseverance.
The two constants by my side have been my father and my faith in God. While we may differ in our styles and physiques, we each bring unique strengths to the ring, and I believe our paths will lead to success in our own ways. I’m feeling really good about my standing in the promotion, I couldn’t have dreamed of better so far. I feel incredibly fortunate and I’m committed to working hard to maintain and improve my position.
With the growing attention on your matches, how do you balance fan expectations with your personal aspirations in wrestling? Are there any specific milestones you hope to achieve soon?
I believe fans appreciate my genuine dedication to my craft. I put in the hard work every single day to chase my dreams, and they see that. You can’t fake the grind. I think fans expect to see me deliver banger matches in the big leagues, guided by their support. This perfectly aligns with my personal wrestling aspirations, and that’s exactly what I am committed to achieving. I’m eager to earn another shot at the Atlas championship as soon as possible, so I can claim it and follow in the footsteps of wrestling legends who have inspired us, like Gunther, as he continues to shape the history of our profession.
