PROGRESS Wrestling Chapter 172 Review: The talent delivered an action-packed night at London’s Electric Ballroom, combining thrilling matches, shocking returns, and high-stakes confrontations.
From the DDEFY Championship opening bout to the women stealing the show in the finale, the evening showcased the best of what PROGRESS Wrestling has to offer.
DEFY World Title Match: KENTA (c) vs. Cara Noir
In one of the evening’s most anticipated matches, KENTA retained his DEFY World Championship in a fiercely competitive match against Cara Noir. Known for his hard-hitting style, KENTA showcased his crooked resilience and adaptability against the mystique and finesse of Cara Noir.
KENTA attacked Cara Noir before the bell, stamped on the previously broken foot of the Royal Black Swan and used the ropes to win. This Bullet Club style victory further cemented KENTA’s 500+ day reign as a dominant DEFY World champion, but Cara Noir was clearly robbed of a fair fight…
Tag Team Match: Sunshine Machine vs. Gene Munny & Will Kroos
In a fun and energetic tag team contest, Gene Munny & Will Kroos picked up the win against the team of Sunshine Machine. Gene Munny was supposed to tag with Session Moth Martina, but she unfortunately suffered an injury the previous night. He replaced her with his ‘nephew’ Will Kroos, whilst Sunshine Machine entered the Halloween chapter dressed as Batman and Robin, much to TK Cooper’s chagrin.
Mambo and Cooper’s chemistry shone through as they entertained the crowd, and ultimately they were on course to secure the victory, only for SAnitY’s music to play and cause the distraction, which led to Munny and Kroos taking advantage and picking up the win over former PROGRESS Tag Team Champions.
PROGRESS Tag Team Title Match: Smokin’ Aces (c) vs. The Experience
The Smokin’ Aces retained their PROGRESS Tag Team Championships against The Experience in a fierce matchup. LA Taylor and Skye Smitson were determined to become the first all-female team to hold the titles, but Smokin’ Aces managed to defend their belts with a mix of teamwork and underhand tactics, maintaining their dominant position in the tag division.
The Experience proved they can hang with the best in this match though, and the crowd were vehement in their support for LA Taylor and Skye Smitson before, during and after the match. They made sure to let their adoring fans know that their voyage to secure history isn’t over yet…
PROGRESS Men’s World Title Match: Luke Jacobs (c) vs. Man Like DeReiss
Luke Jacobs successfully defended his PROGRESS Men’s World Championship against Man Like DeReiss in a hard-hitting bout. DeReiss brought his best, despite Luke Jacobs attacking him during his entrance and taking control of the match early. He fought his way back and looked like he was going to become our new champion after hitting the Four Fiddy but ultimately, Jacobs retained after interference from a returning Ethan Allen.
Allen’s unexpected involvement provided Jacobs with the upper hand he needed to overcome DeReiss, ending the challenger’s valiant effort. Jacobs took to the microphone after the match to dress down his opponent and say that his friends have all left him, whilst Jacobs now has the backing of Ethan Allen and PROGRESS is now the property of the Young Guns.
Four-Way Match: Ricky Knight Jr. vs. Mike D Vecchio vs. Connor Mills vs. Zozaya
This multi-man bout saw Ricky Knight Jr. emerge victorious over Mike D Vecchio, Connor Mills, and Zozaya. The high-energy match featured impressive athleticism and fast-paced action, with each competitor showcasing their unique styles. When we say this was a sprint, we mean it was a sprint! The action was non-stop and Ricky Knight Jr’s win further established him as a top competitor in PROGRESS.
To the extent that after the match he made sure that each of his three competitors got their props before challenging Luke Jacobs to a PROGRESS Men’s World Championship match!
PROGRESS Proteus Title Match: Robbo (c) vs. Simon Miller
In a defining moment of the night, Simon Miller defeated Robbo to capture the PROGRESS Proteus Championship. The match saw Miller overcome Robinson’s brutal style to secure his first major title, marking a significant milestone in his career. Miller’s win ended Robinson’s fierce reign, signalling the start of a new era for the Proteus title.
You NEED to see the crowd reaction to this victory… goosebumps that made us feel all warm and fuzzy in our tum tum.
Tag Team Match: Eddie Dennis & Tate Mayfairs vs. Subculture
In an emotionally charged contest, Subculture defeated the unlikely team of Eddie Dennis and Tate Mayfairs. Despite a tense partnership, Dennis and Mayfairs gave it their all, but Subculture’s cohesive teamwork proved too much, allowing them to come out on top in a personal battle.
Tate Mayfairs made Eddie Dennis arrive to his entrance music rather than Party Hard and then was particularly vicious in his attacks on Subculture, to the ire of Dennis. The mood changed when Flash Morgan Webster slapped Eddie Dennis and the match became a lot more competitive, with Tate and Eddie showing good chemistry only for Tate to believe that he was pushed by Eddie himself, which was not true and that miscommunication led to Mark Andrews hitting his shooting star press for the win.
After the bell, good friends Subculture and Eddie Dennis danced to Party Hard only to invite Tate to do the same, but he declined – walking out of the Electric Ballroom alone after defeat…
Main Event: PROGRESS Women’s World Championship Match: Rhio (c) vs. Lizzy Evo
Rhio continued her historic reign as PROGRESS Women’s Champion with a victory over Lizzy Evo, marking her seventeenth successful title defence. Rhio’s win was hard-fought, as Evo put on a strong challenge, but ultimately, Rhio’s experience and momentum proved decisive, keeping her title reign alive.
The match was main-event worthy with both women putting it all on the line with strong style strikes, incredible feats of endurance and a brutal table spot. Even that couldn’t put the fighting spirit of Lizzy Evo away, who resorted to a new dragon sleeper finish which saw the challenger pass out, not tap out.
When she came to, the pair shook hands and took in the plaudits of the deserved standing ovation both received for such an incredible showing. Lizzy has earned plenty in defeat after such a strong performance and Rhio heads on his US Tour still champion and with more accolades to her name. The women’s division is on fire!
