Kanji burst onto the scene in her debut match in PROGRESS Wrestling, besting six of the best wrestlers in the promotion to win the Thunderbastard match at Chapter 105.
Just three months later, she was PROGRESS Wrestling Women’s Champion after beating Gisele Shaw 2-1 in a gruelling best of three series after Jinny had to drop the belt due to her obligations the the WWE.
That feud was absolutely extraordinary, and despite it taking place in Peckham during the pandemic with no live fans present, the work of both wrestlers was recognised globally thanks to the shows being on the WWE Network.
Kanji valiantly and successfully defended her championship three times before suffering a horrendous arm break whilst wrestling for another promotion which forced her to retire her PROGRESS Wrestling Championship.
To her dismay, it was her foe Gisele Shaw that ended up becoming champion in her absence. All Kanji could do was wait for her snapped arm to heal and watch Gisele Shaw parade around the gold she never technically lost.
Months after the injury, Kanji did return and just like in her debut with the company, her first match back was a Thunderbastard match, and once again she bested six of the best we had to offer to become the new #1 contender.
That win was built out of the will to face Gisele Shaw for the title she felt was her own and at the 2022 Super Strong Style 16 tournament she slayed her arch rival in one of the greatest matches in PROGRESS Wrestling history.
Kanji held the title for six months defending her championship up and down the country before controversially losing to Lana Austin.
Since that loss, Kanji has struggled to show show her true self but we are starting to see a glimmer of the bad ass woman that she is thanks to Lizzy Evo’s disrespectful actions stirring a fire in her.
Can Kanji become a three-time Women’s PROGRESS Champion? We certainly believe so… and we look forward to seeing what her future brings.
