PROGRESS Wrestling Gene Munny Interview: “The crowd have been gnoshing my ego off since I debuted in 2019… and where has it ever gotten me?”

At Chapter 169: The Devil On My Shoulder, Gene Munny successfully defeated the debuting Danhausen and aligned himself with a newly masked Taishi Ozawa. We sat down with Gene Munny to discuss that weekend, his past and his future.

Your victory over Danhausen at Chapter 169 was marked by controversy can you walk us through the match and how you felt about winning?

Controversy?! Which bit was controversial to you? Was it when my opponent assaulted me with multiple foreign objects and left me for dead as I choked breathlessly in the middle of the ring? All I did was try not to die! Is that controversial to you? I won that match via pinfall and cleanly, because I’m really bloody good at this. BEST. IN. SHOW.

There’s an unexpected kinship forming between you and Taishi Ozawa. Can you shed some light on this relationship and whether it was planned or spontaneous?

Taishi Ozawa is my biological son. I will not be answering anymore questions at this time.

Facing Danhausen, a unique and popular character, how did it feel hearing the cheers once reserved for you, being aimed elsewhere, but with a negative reaction for you?

The crowd have been gnoshing my ego off since I debuted in 2019… and where has it ever gotten me? It’s not gotten me gold. It’s not gotten me rich. It’s not gotten me Daft Lads 2! Thing is, I’m the same dog I always have been. BEST. IN. SHOW. Surely, now that I’m winning, and successful, and unconventionally attractive, the crowds should be loving me. But no. They do a boo, like a shit ghost. Maybe they never really supported me in the first place.

Do you think we’ll see more of Danhausen in PROGRESS?

It may surprise you, but yes, I do hope we see Daniel Hausen in PROGGO again. Frankly, I feel freaks like him deserve bigger beatings than what I gave him and I’d love to correct the course of history.

You’ve had an exciting few months, including a victory in the Rufus Hound Underdog Invitational Over the Top Rope Battle Royale and now beating Danhausen. Whilst we might not enjoy seeing it, this new Gene Munny certainly appears to be a lot more successful than what we have seen over the past year or so. What do you put that down to?

The key to success is to not reveal my key to success to PROGRESS journalists.

Going into the recent past, how do you think Warren Banks feels about the new Gene Munny?

I see what you’re doing here. You’re trying to act like Warren was some sort of paragon of virtue. Like, we should all have our morality validated by Saint Banks the Holy! But let’s face it, if there was anyone out there in this stinkass world rooting for me right now, it’s him. He’d take a hit of smoke, kiss me on the forehead, and tell me I’m the BEST. IN. SHOW.

And finally, into the future now, 2024 has been a rollercoaster for you. What are your primary goals for the rest of the year?

I’m winning gold this year. The only question is, how much gold? Because frankly, I COULD win all of it. Me and my son could dethrone Sanity. I could KO the fudge out of Robbo. I could out chop the Axeman. I could out lariat Luke. But that sounds massively inconvenient for me. Knowing PROGRESS, they’d make me defend all four belts in one night… which I would, successfully too, but it feels like a bit of a faff. So, I’ll let the champs survive. So yeah, gold, but maybe like 1 or 3 belts tops.
